News organisations rely heavily on ads that rewards clicks which result in poor quality content.
Introduce a DApp with associated token. Users purchase token and gets ad-free access to participating news sites. DApp pay sites accordingly
This is the total amount allocated to Universal news subscription.
Currently news sites are either financed by ads and thus tend to have poor quality news and user experiences or they are financed by subscriptions which also have poor user experience in that you have to make the judgement of which sites to subscribe to and actually go through the subscription process.
We want to introduce a DApp that provides the service of mediating news site subscriptions, the idea being that with a universal subscription you are freed from committing to any particular news source as a user while still supporting quality journalism.
The intended mechanics of the solution is that:
* Users purchase reader tokens that grant them access to participating news sites.
*Tokens are not spent when consuming news but expire/decay over time.
* Users are incentivised to 'grade' articles they read by the contract prolonging their tokens' validity.
* Tokens (or the ada used to purchase the reader tokens) are then distributed to participating news sites according to the grades they receive and the size of their audience.
We need to build various software components:
* The actual contract that issues the tokens and supports collecting grades and computing payouts
* Integrations that let users log in to news sites with a proof of holding the token
* A wallet/app/browser extension/web page/.. that lets users interact with the contract to give grades etc
Apart from building these we need to market the solution by engaging potential news providers to participate.
Initially the founding team will be responsible for defining the rules of compensation and grading, and responsible for engaging with potential news sites. On the long term, when a stable community has developed, it should be granted more ability to self-govern.
