Ethiopia’s dairy sector lacks transparency, leading to unfair farmer pricing, counterfeit milk, and low consumer trust due to the absence of traceability and accountability systems.
A Cardano-powered platform enabling milk batch NFTs, farmer digital IDs, QR code consumer verification, and smart contract payments to ensure trust and fairness in Ethiopia’s dairy supply chain.
This is the total amount allocated to Dairy Supply Chain Transparency Platform.

Supply Chain
Describe what makes your idea innovative compared to what has been previously funded (whether by you or others).
We target Ethiopian smallholder dairy farmers, feed suppliers, and regulatory authorities. Farmers are engaged through cooperatives, mobile/USSD platforms, and hands-on training; suppliers and regulators via blockchain-integrated dashboards. This initiative drives verifiable on-chain adoption, showcases Cardano’s transformative value in agriculture, and positions Cardano as a trusted, scalable solution for improving food security, supply chain transparency, and economic growth across Africa.
Describe what your prototype or MVP will demonstrate, and where it can be accessed.
Implement a Cardano blockchain registry with QR-coded feed verification, deploy mobile/USSD tools for real-time farmer access, onboard and train farmers, integrate suppliers and regulators, execute a pilot, launch DairyToken incentives, monitor adoption and on-chain metrics, and establish a scalable, sustainable model for long-term impact and regional replication.
Describe realistic measures of success, ideally with on-chain metrics.
Success will be measured by on-chain verification of feed batches, extensive farmer adoption via mobile/USSD, active supplier engagement, functional regulatory dashboards, DairyToken incentive utilization, demonstrable milk yield increases, pilot validation for scalability, and the establishment of a sustainable, replicable Cardano-powered model for transforming dairy productivity across the region.
Please describe your proposed solution and how it addresses the problem
We will create a blockchain-based dairy traceability platform on Cardano. Farmers will receive digital IDs via Atala PRISM, milk batches will be minted as NFTs with time, quality, and source data, and smart contracts will automatically pay farmers once milk passes cooperative quality checks. Consumers can scan QR codes on milk packs to verify authenticity. Farmers without smartphones will access the system via USSD/SMS. The pilot targets 500 farmers, 2 cooperatives, and 10,000 consumer scans.
Please define the positive impact your project will have on the wider Cardano community
On-chain adoption: 10,000+ on-chain transactions during pilot.
Showcase for Atala PRISM + NFTs: A live African use case of Cardano identity and NFT utility.
Ecosystem growth: Creates a blueprint for traceability solutions across agriculture (coffee, honey, grains).
Brand reputation: Demonstrates Cardano’s ability to deliver real-world, high-SDG impact projects in Africa, a key growth region.
What is your capability to deliver your project with high levels of trust and accountability? How do you intend to validate if your approach is feasible?
Team Expertise:
Biruk Zerihun (Team Lead) – 6+ years in agribusiness digital strategy & blockchain marketing.
Eskender Yosef (Dairy Lead) – Award-winning Ethiopian dairy farmer, recipient of $1M+ USAID grants.
Eyasu Birhanu (Tech Lead) – Cardano developer, experienced in Atala PRISM, NFT issuance, smart contracts.
Feasibility Validation:
MVP tested with 2 cooperatives and 500 farmers.
Smart contract & NFT prototypes verified on Cardano testnet before pilot.
Consumer QR testing with live milk packages.
NGO/local government support letters to strengthen adoption.

Please provide a cost breakdown of the proposed work and resources
Budget: 60000ADA
Platform Development (MVP, Mobile, USSD): 27,000 ADA (45%) – Core system, mobile and USSD tools.Blockchain Integration & Smart Contracts: 12,000 ADA (20%) – Smart contracts and on-chain registry.Farmer Training & Onboarding: 9,000 ADA (15%) – Workshops, training materials, and onboarding support.Cooperative Support & Devices: 6,000 ADA (10%) – Devices and cooperative integration.Project Management & Evaluation: 6,000 ADA (10%) – Monitoring, reporting, and administrative oversight.
How does the cost of the project represent value for the Cardano ecosystem?
Scalable pilot: With 60,000 ADA, we onboard 300 farmers and generate 6,000+ on-chain transactions, demonstrating Cardano adoption in agriculture.
Low cost per outcome: ~20 ADA per farmer onboarded and ~10 ADA per 1,000 liters tracked on-chain. High-visibility impact: Ethiopia’s dairy sector is critical; success builds strong Cardano branding and trust across African agriculture.Reusable model: The blockchain architecture can extend to coffee, honey, and other agricultural exports, maximizing ROI and ecosystem value
