AirChain: Decentralized Air Quality Monitoring in Nigeria

Problem

Urban pollution fuels widespread respiratory and infectious illnesses, but Nigeria lacks reliable monitoring. Traditional stations are too few and costly, leaving citizens blind to daily risks.

Solution

We are building AirChain: A network of unified low-cost IoT sensors, edge analytics, and a data exchange to make air quality data open, reliable, and economically valuable.

About this idea

Team

  1. Abdulazeez Bello — Founder & Lead Engineer

LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/abdulazeez-folaranmi-bello-38b83419a/

Role: System architecture, firmware engineer, backend developer, blockchain integration lead.

Scope: Designs and maintains the hardware, firmware, calibration process, backend APIs, dashboard systems, and Cardano integration. Leads all engineering decisions, milestone execution, technical documentation, and quality assurance. Abdulazeez built the current prototypes, backend, dashboard, calibration bench, and token infrastructure already in production use.

  1. Victor Ekanem — DevOps & Infrastructure Engineer

LinkedIn: Not available

Role: Cloud, Kubernetes, CI/CD, monitoring, and reliability engineering.

Scope: Manages full infrastructure deployment across Kubernetes clusters, monitors sensor network uptime, handles observability, configures scaling policies, and ensures zero-downtime deployments. Oversees blockchain node reliability and prepares the environment for mainnet integration.

  1. Edidiong Udoh — Hardware Fabrication & Manufacturing Engineer

LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/edidiong-udoh-46011a192/

Role: Production engineering, fabrication workflow, and hardware QA.

Scope: Oversees PCB assembly, enclosure design, bill-of-materials optimization, and scaling manufacturing from 50 → 500 → 1,000 units. Ensures industrial-grade reliability, manages fabrication timelines, and coordinates supply-chain operations.

  1. Phillip Ekpo — IoT & Firmware Engineer

LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/phillip-ekpo-b87050353/

Role: Firmware, connectivity, OTA updates, power optimization.

Scope: Develops and maintains the firmware responsible for MQTT connectivity, battery performance, environmental sensing, secure transmission, and resilience in Lagos-specific conditions. Manages OTA infrastructure and improves long-term device reliability.

  1. Ndanso Udoh — Community & Deployment Manager

LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ndanso-udoh-266367378/

Role: Operator onboarding, field logistics, deployment management.

Scope: Recruits and trains operators (scaling from 50 → 1,000), conducts workshops, manages field deployment coordination, ensures operator retention, collects feedback, and leads community outreach. Coordinates NGO collaborations and community-facing initiatives.

Collaborators

Build-A-Tech Workspace (Incubation Partner)

Role: Governance oversight, fabrication facility access, business mentorship.

Scope: Provides working space, prototyping tools, internal review, fund management guidance, and operational governance frameworks. Ensures strong compliance and strategic alignment throughout all milestones.

Status: Actively engaged and already supporting the project.

Skills Gaps & Recruitment Plan

As we scale to 1,000 sensors, additional hires will be made to ensure successful execution:

  1. Product Designer (UI/UX)

Needed for dashboard UX improvements, API portal UI, operator mobile app refinement.

  1. Data Scientist / Environmental Analyst

Required for AQI modeling, calibration analysis, GIS overlays, and pollution pattern reporting.

  1. Mobile App Developer (Android)

Needed to improve operator onboarding flows, notifications, and field reliability in the mobile app.

  1. Field Operations Coordinator

Manages deployment logistics, maintenance scheduling, spare-part allocation, and field troubleshooting at scale.

  1. Finance & Audit Assistant

Supports reconciliation, audit-preparation, documentation, and reporting during Milestones 4–5.

All roles are clearly defined, and hiring will be staged according to milestone needs.
