SUAN Early carbon removal market

This is an early carbon removal, blockchain-enabled marketplace that allows for trading and leveraging early stage climate-smart assets.

[IMPACT]

Low access to coverage and volume of climate-smart projects in developing countries for investors, companies, governments and people in the territories, due to elements such as: questionable ownership, little or no transparency, very little marketable content, fragmented project landscape, lack of reliable data, lack of scalable monetization models, concern about permanence and sustainability of projects, as well as lack of democratization related to access to markets with better pricing structures.

The COP26 pledges only cover 1/3 of the emission reductions needed to keep the world below 2°C. This makes the supply of CO2 tonne reductions insufficient to meet the target and satisfy the market. It is worth mentioning here that commitments have been raised from 25% to 45% in emission reductions by 2030.

They have concentrated on working and commercializing the available supply of verified ton of CO2 for carbon footprint offsetting purposes, having limited coverage for early carbon markets. The most important global references are: Air Carbon Exchange (Singapore) , PowerLedger ( Australia) and SunExchange (South Africa); and in carbon removal markets Nori (USA), which have low or no coverage in developing countries and with climate assets only in a few categories.

We are an ecosystem that accelerates the development of climate assets (forestry, agroforestry, conservation, energy, transportation, construction) to be tokenized in our ecosystem with three components:

A: Scalable and reliable operating system that offers benefits such as: closed-loop data, real-time tracking and building using blockchain technology. This data is protected and we also use Application Programming Interface and its iIntegrations. Here it is important to say that every transaction is published on the blockchain in order to allow a single and immutable registration.

B. Use of algorithms for: 1. Predicting the potential impact of an early stage project, called Oracles and 2. Algorithms for asset valuation over time through a proprietary Tokenomics model for transactions between asset owners.

Why it's a Game Changer: What makes it a big step forward or a game changer to address the problem or need it addresses? We found a way to democratize access to the carbon market to all players in the economic ecosystem, regardless of the stage of the project, nor the capital constraints of the stakeholders, we can securitize in crypto assets projects allowing to monetize and access markets with better attractiveness in pricing and volume. Using the combination of 4.0 technologies, in order to enable simple access to climate-smart assets for all.

The project seeks to initially impact the moorlands as a Climate Smart Asset, in a reserve called "Páramo Los Laureles" located in the municipality of Murillo, Tolima, Colombia, with an area of 430 hectares. This asset functions as a natural carbon sink, water reserve and great biodiversity. With the objective of transforming the blockchain into a financial and secure instrument to improve the sustainability of natural reserves that are currently at risk, with a potential long-term impact of 29,000 square kilometers in Colombia (representing 60% of the páramos worldwide) and 80% of the frailejones 91 of 139 species, many of them endemic.

El bajo acceso de cobertura y volumen de proyectos climáticamente inteligentes en países en vía de desarrollo para inversionistas, empresas, gobiernos y personas de los territorios, por elementos como: propiedad cuestionable, poca o ninguna transparencia, muy poco contenido comercializable, panorama de proyectos fragmentado, falta de datos fiables, falta de modelos de monetización escalables, preocupación por la permanencia y sostenibilidad de los proyectos, así como la falta de democratización relacionada con el acceso a mercados con mejores estructuras de precios.

Las promesas del COP26 solo cubren 1/3 de las reducciones de las emisiones necesarias para mantener al mundo por debajo de 2°C. Esto hace que la oferta de reducción de toneladas de CO2 sea insuficiente para cubrir la meta y satisfacer el mercado. Es necesario mencionar aquí que los compromisos se han elevado de 25% a 45% en la reducción de las emisiones para 2030.  

Las compañias competidoras del sector se han concentrado en trabajar y comercializar la oferta disponible de ton de CO2 verificadas para efectos de compensación de huella de carbono, teniendo cobertura limitada para mercados tempranos de carbono. Los referentes mundiales más importantes son: Air Carbon Exchange (Singapur) , PowerLedger ( Australia) y SunExchange (Sudafrica); y en mercados de remoción de carbono Nori (EE.UU.), los cuales tienen baja o nula cobertura en países en vía de desarrollo y con activos climáticos solo en pocas categorías.

Somos un ecosistema que acelera el desarrollo de activos climáticos (forestales, agroforestales, conservación, energía, transporte, construcción) para ser tokenizados en nuestro ecosistema con tres componentes: 

A: Sistema operativo escalable y confiable que ofrece beneficios como: datos de bucle cerrado, seguimiento en tiempo real y construcción utilizando la tecnología blockchain. Estos datos están protegidos y además utilizamos Integraciones API para adquirir y distribuir la información de forma transparente a todos los grupos de interés. Aquí es importante decir que cada transacción se publica en la blockchain con el fin de permitir un registro único e inmutable. 

B. Uso de algoritmos para: 1. Predecir el potencial impacto de un proyecto en etapa temprana, denominados Oráculos y 2. Algoritmos de valorización de los activos en el tiempo, a través de un modelo propio de Tokenomics para operaciones entre los dueños de los activos. 

Encontramos la forma de democratizar el acceso al mercado de carbono a todos los actores del ecosistema económico, sin importar la etapa del proyecto, ni las restricciones de capital de los interesados, podemos securitizar en activos cripto proyectos permitiendo monetizar y acceder a mercados de mejor atractivo en precios y volumen. Usando la combinación de tecnologías 4.0, con el fin de permitir un acceso simple a activos climáticamente inteligentes para todos.

El proyecto busca impactar inicialmente a los páramos como Activo Climáticamente Inteligente, en una reserva denominada “Páramo Los Laureles” localizada en el municipio de Murillo, Tolima, Colombia, con una extensión de 430 Hectáreas. Este activo funciona como sumidero natural de carbono, reserva de agua y gran biodiversidad. Con el objetivo de transformar el blockchain en un instrumento financiero y seguro para mejorar la sostenibilidad de las reservas naturales que están en riesgo actualmente, con un potencial de impacto a largo de 29.000 kilómetros cuadrados en Colombia (representan el 60% de los páramos a nivel mundial) y el 80% de la especies de frailejones 91 de 139, muchas de ellas endémicas.

The project will bring communities closer to the world of distributed technologies, matching the need for a sustainable world (climate-smart projects) and the possibility of a massive transactional system of tokenized assets capable of equitably distributing wealth. The designed ecosystem (see Suan Verse) will allow democratizing access to a unique intangible asset such as Carbon Equivalent Tons, from early stages.

The project opens a unique opportunity for the Cardano community to be one of the relevant transactional systems in closing the global gap in carbon reduction or sequestration of the more than 23 billion tons of CO2 per year and to participate in the more than 15 billion tons of CO2eq that have not yet been manufactured. Having a unique transactional possibility to position Cardano as a relevant player on the road to a global carbon neutral economy.

Integration with standards or measurement methodologies.

Standards give solidity to measurement methodologies, organizations such as Verra, Gold Standard, Proclima International, among others, facilitate the use of a common technical language when presenting a climate change mitigation project. The challenge is how to add the details of the standards to the tokenized climate assets as they are being developed?

Mitigation strategy:

The system seeks to create the climate assets from any stage, even when deciding to create the project. Through a maturation process the project progresses towards the delivery of verified tons of CO2eq, where value milestones are designed such as: Creation of climate asset, Ownership, first financing, structuring, validation, delivery to brokers, raising, full financing, kick-off, monitoring and verification of impact generated (Ton CO2eq). Each of these milestones represents a transaction in the blockchain and programmatically uploads relevant metadata and accesses to supports in the project progress (e.g. files in the IPFS network), thus Suan is fully compliant with the standards and with the full traceability required by international methodologies.

Scalability of validation and verification processes

The validation and verification processes are carried out by experts in each subject (AFOLU, Energy, Transportation) generating a bottleneck to structure and validate at scale.

Mitigation strategy.

Thanks to the potential of blockchain principles, by generating a climate asset early, we have a bank of value (tokens) with which we can generate reward structures for investors, and we can use that value in favor of generating an economy around climate assets.

For the structurers, a DAO can be generated to provide rewards to the actors who wish to structure a climate project by automatically earning tokens for their contributions, and facilitating the maturation and valorization of the projects thanks to their work.

For the validators, we can structure a model where the structurers can be random evaluators of other projects (as a consensus mechanism), in this way we can create a peer-to-peer network of project validation where the incentive for the structurer to do the work of validator, is to be able to advance in the maturation of his own project. Generating rules such as: "for a project to be validated, the structurer must first validate (evaluate) three projects from the community". Generating the opportunity for the network to develop its own pace of progress, breaking the identified bottleneck.

Acceptance by the financial sector of tokens as debt collateral.

The market is used to receiving traditional collateral to support debt or investment on climate projects. How to qualify tokens as financial collateral for project funding?

Mitigation strategy

The guarantee for a debt is only a mechanism to ensure trust. By generating a smart contract that promotes the systematic maturation of projects, a way to qualify tokens is established through the addition of relevant technical metadata, positioning them as the vehicle par excellence to generate trust in the project. This feature added to the ease of demonstrating "Ownership" generates the perfect mix to transform the token as the real underlying of potential future revenues (CO2 offset market) and the source of digital collateral.

1. Integración con los estándares o metodologías de medición. 

Los estándares dan solidez a las metodologías de medición, organizaciones como Verra, Gold Estándar, Proclima internacional, entre otros, facilitan el uso de un lenguaje técnico común en el momento de presentar un proyecto de mitigación de cambio climático. El reto es como añadir los detalles de los estandares a los activos climaticos tokenizados mientras estos se van desarrollando?

Estrategia de mitigación: 

El sistema busca crear los activos climáticos desde cualquier etapa, incluso cuando se decide crear el proyecto. A través de un proceso de maduración el proyecto va avanzando hacia la entrega de ton de CO2eq verificadas, donde se diseñan hitos de valor como: Creacion de activo climatico, Ownership, primera financiación, estructuración, validación, entrega a brokers, raising, financiación completa, kick-off, supervisión y verificación de impacto generado (Ton CO2eq). Cada uno de estos hito representa una transacción en la blockchain y carga de forma programada metadata relevante y accesos a soportes en el avance del proyecto (Ej: archivos en la red IPFS), de esta forma Suan cumple con los estándares de forma completa y con la trazabilidad completa exigida por las metodologías internacionales. 

1. Escalabilidad de los procesos de validación y verificación 

Los procesos de validación y verificación son realizados por personas expertas en cada temática (AFOLU, Energía, Transporte) generando un cuello de botella para estructurar y validar a escala. 

Estrategia de mitigación.

Gracias al potencial de los principios de la blockchain, al generar un activo climatico de forma temprana, tenemos un banco de valor (tokens) con lo que podemos generar estructuras de recompensas para inversionistas, y podemos usar ese valor a favor de generar una economía alrededor de los activos climaticos. 

Para los estructuradores, se puede generar una DAO que permita brindar recompensas los actores que deseen estructurar un proyecto climatico ganando tokens de forma automatica por sus aportes, y facilitando la maduracion y valorizacion de los proyectos gracias a su trabajo.

Para los validadores, se puede estructurar un modelo donde los estructuradores puedan ser evaluadores aleatorios de otros proyectos (como un mecanismo de consenso), de esta forma podemos crear una red peer-to-peer de validación de proyectos donde el incentivo del estructurador para hacer el trabajo de validador, es poder avanzar en la maduración de su proyecto propio. Generando reglas como; “para que un proyecto sea validado, antes el estructurador debe Validar (evaluar) tres proyectos de la comunidad”. Generando la oportunidad de que la red desarrolle su propio ritmo de avance, rompiendo el cuello de botella identificado.     

1. Aceptación del sector financiero de los tokens como garantía de deuda.

El mercado está acostumbrado a recibir garantías tradicionales para soportar la deuda o inversión sobre los proyectos climáticos. Cómo cualificar los tokens como garantía financiera para el fondeo de los proyectos?

Estrategia de mitigación

La garantía para una deuda es solo un mecanismo para garantizar la confianza. Al generar un contrato inteligente que promueva la maduración sistemática de proyectos, se establece una forma de cualificar los tokens a través de la adición de metadata técnica relevante, posicionando a estos como el vehículo por excelencia para generar confianza en el proyecto. Esta característica sumada a la facilidad para demostrar el “Ownership” generan la mezcla perfecta para transformar al token como subyacente real de los ingresos potenciales futuros (mercado de compensación de CO2) y la fuente de garantías reales digitales.
