Goals:
Background/Overall Mission
During the COVID-19 pandemic, 'Spaces of Urgency' (communities including musicians, artists, labels, independent clubs and organizers, etc.), have suffered economically, becoming too dependent on government assistance. In particular, emerging musicians and artists in the nightlife scene have found it difficult to grow their fan-bases and also to reach wider, international audiences due to venue closures and a decline in international travel. Additionally, there are longer-term factors that precede the pandemic. For years, gentrification has threatened local, physical spaces (clubs, etc.) where musicians and artists have traditionally created and showcased their work.
Cultural spaces, musician and artist communities are under threat and require new approaches to support the growth and internationalization of their careers, and also to establish equal opportunities and fairer remuneration for their artistic and cultural outputs. In order to address the above problems, transparent, fair, nonhierarchical forms of self-organization and governance can help spaces of urgency - communities of musicians, artists, labels, and independent clubs and organizers - adopt disruptive ways of creating, managing, and disseminating their cultural goods, as well as the way these goods are monetized and consumed by audiences.
Since Space of Urgency and United We Stream are part of a vast worldwide network of established artists/musicians, organizers, and those working to preserve cultural spaces, we believe there is a unique chance to invite a few established artists/musicians to mint their goods in real time - or 'live mint' - with the Cardano Catalyst Community. Through this collaboration, other independent cultural actors will be inspired to become active members and join our Hub - Global Association for Distributed Arts & Culture (GADAC) - and in turn, the Cardano Catalyst Community.
The NFTs could include anything from music to commemorative tickets, merchandise, etc. The creation and distribution of these NFTs has the potential to create a sustainable social and economic impact, with the initial profits contributing to the development of a Space of Urgency Virtual Platform and GADAC DisCO.With the Alonzo hard fork and the full release and implementation of smart contracts, NFTs minted on Cardano will undoubtedly increase dramatically in the coming months. It's an optimal time to introduce a range of new, diverse artists and musicians to the Cardano Community, benefitting:
(1) the artists/musicians and other members of arts and cultural communities who are new to the Cardano ecosystem, and world of blockchain more broadly, by onboarding them via an established community and set of processes and protocols built on collective, decentralized innovation and self-determination, values that are also embedded in the cultural spaces and communities SoU and UWS work with; and
(2) the Cardano Community, by forging connections with a broader range of viewpoints and creative input, as well as amplifying Cardano's reach and impact with the onboarding of more established artists/musicians who will act as ambassadors. This will in turn inspire an even greater number of currently underrepresented communities to adopt Cardano and help it amplify its reach and onboarding potential.
The Team:
We're a group of activists, community organizers, entrepreneurs, researchers, writers, and artists working together to establish a Global Association for Decentralized Arts & Culture (GADAC). Through this networked system and platform our aim is to both:
(1) create tools for autonomous, nonhierarchical, self-organized communities to efficiently and fairly govern, track contributions (especially community care and pro bono work) and remuneration, establish scalability, etc. (detailed in our other F6 proposal, DisCO of Urgency); and
(2) help these communities generate revenue via the minting and distribution of NFTs, thus creating participatory and/or monetary value (value onboarding). Through this different kind of redistribution structure, participating artists would also have the option to auction their NFT's and distribute ROI to arts and culture communities and the Cardano ecosystem.
After working for 10 years directly with artist and cultural communities, primarily those which have been marginalized by mainstream society and the status quo economic system, we've come to understand that new resilience strategies are needed - strategies that eliminate the need for government dependence and redistribution structures with little ROI. During the last years, we have facilitated substantive dialogue and debates and organized numerous conferences and events with interdisciplinary actors such as political agents, local governments, artists, and cultural communities. Establishing GADAC is a natural next step in the progression of our work.
Space of Urgency (SoU) (Liese Kingma, Lucas Counter, Heather Brown): Space of Urgency´s mission is to empower the visibility and resilience of independent cultural spaces and their communities, by sharing stories, knowledge, and tools for tangible solidarity in times of crisis. Expertise in designing and hosting workshops and knowledge exchange programs, and developing cultural community projects that bring collectives together, build trust, and foster deep knowledge exchange for social impact and community resilience. The project was founded in Berlin by a three-person core team.
United We Stream (UWS) (Anna Harnes and Danaja Volk): Expertise in marketing and global outreach media strategies for social impact. The broader project team includes six Berlin-based members. The cultural platform was initiated in Berlin in March 2020 as the club scene's response to COVID-19 and has since gone far beyond that to advocate for the preservation and sustainable development of club culture, diversity, and equality through streaming, partnerships, and campaigns. The global movement has involved over 2,200 artists in 117 cities. The Berlin-based association is the umbrella for the worldwide network of individuals, clubs, and collectives.
